Aldi SCHOOL PLAYING FIELDS – We are registered for this competitio­n so would be grateful for Stickers etc currently available in Aldi Stores.

SCHOOL SHOP – parents’ associatio­n will open a school shop on Friday, February 15, so that children can purchase little treats etc.

SPRINGTIME DRAW – Tickets are being distribute­d currently for our Springtime Draw, our main fundraisin­g event. Local support is much appreciate­d.

GAA CLUB NOTES

Newtown GAA extend their deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Peter Farrell, who very sadly passed away last week. Peter was a member of the winning minor team and a gentleman to all, he will be sorely missed and remembered by all. May he rest in peace.

Newtown seniors took on Éire Óg on Thursday last in the first game of the league, final scoreline was 2-10 to 1-10. We were proud to see two Newtown men Mark Fitzsimons and Shane Mooney on the starting panel for Wicklow V Limerick in round three of the league on Sunday last.

Operation transforma­tion walks continue Thursdays at 7 p.m. from the clubhouse. Well done to all who have taken part so far and to anyone else get up and get walking.

Tickets are on sale for the national club draw, tickets are €10 and there are 20 excellent prizes. Tickets can be bought in the post office or off any committee member.

There was no jackpot winner of last week’s lotto, numbers drawn were 2, 7, 21 and 24 and nine people matched three numbers. This week’s jackpot was an even €4k.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

The small-sided game format will be up and running on the weekend of February 23/24.2019 for the under-nines and 11’s with 8’s and 10’s starting back the following weekend of March 2/3 2019. All these age groups will be playing every weekend.

Regards the 12’s they will start on the weekend of March 2/3 while the under-13s will be back the previous weekend of February 23/24. For the first few weeks these teams will play on alternate weekends but we have been assured by the executive of the WDSL that they will be playing every weekend soon after the start of the season. All players playing football this season will have to be registered online at FA.

Our under-eights, under-nines, under-10 Red and Black teams were in Futsal action last weekend and all four teams were in superb form. Our under-eights were in Newtown and they came out on top of their game against Enniskerry, but lost out to St Patrick’s and Arklow United.

The 8’s squad included Bobby Spillane, Tyler Doyle, Nathan Donohoe, Rory O’Gorman, Colin Healy and David McCormack. Our 9’s travelled to Aughrim and from their three games they got the better of Coolboy Rangers and Shillelagh while coming up short against St Patrick’s. In all the games there was only a single goal between the teams. The under-nines squad was John Turley, Ryan McDonald, Lucas Dowdall, Albie Chance, Leon O’Connor, Alex Ryan and Jayden Doyle.

Our under-10 Red team came out on top in their three games against our Black team, Enniskerry and Arklow United. The 10’s Red squad included Nikita Neaga, Mikey Synnott, David Mackey, Aidan Heffernan, William Valentine, Pat Carey, Sebastian Anton and Ryan Collins. Our under-10 Black team had one win and two losses from their three games in the same group. The under-10 Black squad was as follows, Dylan Dunleavy, Cathal O’Toole, Scott McKenna, Dayle Carthy, Darren Fisher, Aaron Roy, Luke Turley and Max Roche.

Also well done to two of our under-12 players Brooklyn Doyle and Patrick Martin, who played for their county in Mullingar against the Midlands. Well done, lads.

Regards the Futsal the upcoming times, dates and venues for our teams as follows. Sat. February 16 – Venues: Aughrim and Newtown for players born in 2006 (last year’s under-12s) Further details to be confirmed.

Our teams are all starting to get back to training for the new season from this week and new players are always very welcome to join our club. We will be fielding teams from under-eights up to under-13s and although it looks more than likely that we won’t have any older teams at the moment, as usual if the demand is there and players are prepared to commit to training and matches then nothing is impossible. Last seasons’ Academy team will now become this seasons under-eights team, though some of these players will be playing at the under-eights age group for two more years.

Our Developmen­t Squad practise every Saturday morning in the community centre Sports Hall from 10 a.m. till 11 a.m. All of our teams are now back in pre-season training. Three players from our club are celebratin­g birthdays in the coming week and they are Adam Hall from the Developmen­t Squad, Aaron Nolan from the under-nines and Cormac Chance from the under-12s. Happy birthday lads from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.

Our second Last Man Standing competitio­n of the season will start back on Tuesday, February 26/Wednesday, February 27, so if you would like to take part please let any of our committee members or coaches know and they will fill you in with all the informatio­n you require. All money we take in goes towards the youth of the area.

ANNUAL MASS OF REMEMBRANC­E

The annual Mass of remembranc­e for parishione­rs and family members of parishione­rs, who died since March last year, and whose funerals took place outside the parish, will take place on Saturday, February 23, at 6 p.m. There is be a box in the church porch for the names of loved ones. These names will be placed on the Altar during the Mass.

LUNCH CLUB

The next active retirement lunch takes place on Friday, February 22, in the Coach House at 1.30 p.m.

CANCER SUPPORT

The Roundwood Cancer Support centre is now up and running and is open in the Parish Centre on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m. Please feel free to pop in for a chat we will be happy to help. PLOUGHING MATCH.

Roundwood Ploughing Society are holding their annual ploughing match on Saturday, February 23, at midday in Glasnamull­en. Sincere thanks to Richard Turner for providing the site. Convention­al, vintage, Classic Tractor and Horse Classes will be catered for on Lea ground. HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Roundwood Historical Society will hold their AGM on Monday, February 25, at 8 p.m. in Roundwood Parish Hall. There are a number of vacant positions on the committee so please feel free to contact any member of the committee if you would like to be nominated for a position or suggest someone for a nomination. In addition to the AGM we have two talks scheduled for March and April.

The March talk will take place on Tuesday, March 5, at 8 p.m. in Roundwood Parish Hall. The topic is the 100th Anniversar­y of the First Dail and will be given by Éamon Ó Cuív, TD.

The April talk will take place on Monday, April 29, at 8 p.m. in Roundwood Parish Hall. The topic of the talk is the Repatriati­on of WB Yeats and the Non-Repatriati­on of James Joyce based on a new book by Anthony J Jordan, who will deliver the talk.

DANCE

The monthly dance will take place in Roundwood Parish Centre on Friday, February 15, with music by John Flood.

TRIPS

There will be a five-day trip to Slovenia on April 4 to April 9 at a cost of €699 per person sharing. As there are limited places a deposit of €200 is required asap. There will be a tour of Scotland in August/September dates to be decided and a Westport country music break in October 2019 which includes some day trips. Roundwood Whizzers Walking Group are back in action meeting at 7 p.m. every Wednesday at the Coach House car park. All welcome to walk at your own pace for approximat­ely one hour.
