Glens come through tough test from Town

-

Wicklow Cup second round

Last season’s beaten finalists Glencormac United booked their place in the last eight of the Wicklow Cup with a 4-2 win over Arklow Town on Sunday.

It looked like a shock could be on the cards as the Division 3 high-flyers began brightly and took a 1-0 advantage into the break, scoring after just ten minutes when Conor Dodd did well to break through the Glencormac defence and set up George Byrne, who finished with aplomb.

The Premier Division side got back on level terms five minutes after the interval when Luke Reynolds hit the back of the net.

Town didn’t let their heads drop though and they got their noses back in front on 55 minutes, with Conor Dodd scoring from the penalty spot.

However, the goal kick-started the Glens into action and they began to turn the screw, with Josh O’Callaghan making it 2-2 before goals from Nathan Watters and Simon Doyle sealed the deal.

Division 1 side St Anthony’s also made it through to the quarter-finals as they saw off Dargle Rovers 3-0.

Patrick Woods, Kyle O’Reilly and Stafford Quaid got the goals for the Kilcoole outfit.

Elsewhere, holders Newtown United ‘A’ got the better of Avonmore AFC ‘A’ 2-1 (see focus match).

Division 3

Leaders Dearg Celtic let a two-goal half-time lead slip as they dropped league points for the first time this season against a determined Ashford Rovers outfit.

The pacesetters looked to be on the way to their customary three points, with goals from Michael Murphy and John Andrew Kinsella giving them a 2-0 advantage at the break.

Ashford had other ideas, however, and an own goal brought them back into the contest, before substitute Joel Vlaar got the equaliser after a good cross from Paul Conyard.

Dylan Graham helped himself to a hattrick as Roundwood AFC went on a scoring spree against Ballywaltrim.

Robin Byrne, Ross Doonan, Damien Johnson, Kevin Lynch and Tony Conway got the other goals for the winners in an 8-2 victory.

Davie Moorehouse, Davie Doran and Stephen Roche got on the scoresheet for Conary United in their 3-1 win over Aughrim Rangers, with Pádraig Byrne replying for Rangers.

JJ McCrea hit the back of the net for Carnew AFC, but they lost out 2-1 to Coolboy Rangers.
