SnapChats exhibition is launched
OVER 50 people attended the launch night of an exhibition at the Cruthu Gallery in Russborough House which featured the work of West Wicklow Youth Project members.
Three groups of young people from Baltinglass, Dunlavin and Blessington started working on the project late last year. The creative process involved an introduction to art theory and practice, a trip to the National Gallery of Ireland, community mapping, interviews, photo shoots and the production of three large scale collaborative art pieces plus some smaller individual works.
The Baltinglass piece on display as part of the ‘SnapChats: Conversations and Connections Captured on Canvas’ exhibition represented the abbey, the ancient hilltop burial grounds, Jenny Wise Power, Michael Dwyer, the Dice Man, Rosie and Margaret community volunteers, the choir, badminton players and GAA champions to the local Turkish barber
Blessington’s water colour drawing includes the tidy towns, taekwondo, blacksmiths, butchers, bird of prey enthusiasts to young musicians, skater boys and the lifeboat rescue team alongside trams, churches and monuments.
Dunlavin’s painting expresses representations of the people who make their village what it from the green grocer and the local Garda to the librarian, scout master and coder dojo volunteers to the Dunlavin Dairy.
Three young people involved in the project – Kelly Ann Foster, Eoin Grattan and Cara Swaine – spoke at the launch, while Hannah Molloy and Yvonne Dempsey both sang. Ribbon cutting duties were carried out by Niamh Dowling, Shannon Jones and Callum Farrell.
