MICHAEL DWYERS 5-7 NRT. WW GALES 1-0

IN ideal conditions for hurling on Saturday afternoon last, both Michael Dwyers and North Wicklow Gaels qualified to go forward to represent Wicklow in the upcoming national Féile na nGael hurling competition in Cork this coming June.

Both team qualified and agreed to play the final on Saturday last after a round of group games, which included Glenealy as Arklow Rock Parnells withdrew during the week.

Michael Dwyers proved too strong for a young Glenealy side on a scoreline of 5-7 to 0-2 in the opening round.

In round two, Dwyers had a tough encounter with a spirited North Wicklow Gaels side in a ding dong battle, that could have went either way, however the west Wicklow side were that bit more composed in front of the posts with their shot selection as Dwyers won out 2-6 to 0-4 in the wind up.

So, in round three, it was North Wicklow Gaels versus Glenealy, with the winners to qualify for a final spot against Michael Dwyers.

A young Glenealy side battled hard but the Gaels progressed on a scoreline of 4-4 to 0-2.

In the final, Dwyers got off to a flying start with two quickfire points from the hurl of Jack O’Toole, which was duly followed by a brace of goals from Rob Murtagh.

Callum McRae was the next to raise a green flag for a dominant Dwyers side, who was led by playmaker, James Boland. Christy Connor and Seamus Darcy had efforts early on for North Wicklow, but some resolute defending by Patrick William Cullen Dunne and Felim Lynch Ward cleared the danger.

Brian Richardson tagged on another point before Jack O Toole closed out the opening period with a point from an acute angle.

Young Andy Corrigan was in like a light to finish the sliotar to the net for another major for Dwyers on the restart after good work by Sean Darker. James Boland fired over an inspirational 65 for the score of the match.

North Wicklow Gaels battled hard with good showings from Alec Bartec, Willie Cash and Jack Caffrey. Callum McRea fired in his second major as Dwyer’s rose up another gear.

Jack O’Toole and Ivor Fenton closed out the scoring for Dwyer’s. In the final moments, Tom O’Connell played a sweet pass into Joshua Barr, whose shot flew into the roof of the Dwyers net as the final whistle sounded.

Coiste na nÓg Chairman Pat Dunne thanked Eddie Leonard for coordinating, the referee and complimented all three teams on the day, before presenting Michael Dwyer’s captain James Boland with the winning trophy.

Scorers – Michael Dwyers: Callum McRae 2-0, Rob Murtagh 2-0, Andy Corrigan 1-0, Jack O’Toole 0-4, Brian Richardson 0-1, Ivor Fenton 0-1, James Boland 0-1.
