Injured and in foal pony Kay on the mend

PONY FOUND WITH INFECTED NECK WOUND RESCUED IN ARKLOW

- By NIAMH O’CONNOR

KAY – a pony heavily in foal that was rescued from Arklow with an horrific neck wound last month – is making a good recovery with the Irish Horse Welfare Trust.

‘She’s doing really well considering she’s expecting a foal and must have been in so much pain for several weeks,’ IHWT chief executive Sharon Power said.

The injured pony, subsequently called Kay by her carers, was discovered when the ISPCA responded to a call for help made to the National Animal Cruelty Helpline on March 15.

ISPCA Chief Inspector Conor Dowling discovered she had a severely infected wound on her neck that required urgent veterinary attention, and seized and transported her to the IHWT in Woodenbridge. The pony, which was not microchipped, was later named Kay.

‘It is difficult to establish the exact cause of the injury which, could have been there for some time,’ ISPCA Chief Inspector Conor Dowling said. ‘She is a real fighter and it’s great to see her recovering so well. I find it difficult to understand how anyone could leave a pony to suffer in this condition. Those responsible for animals must ensure that they receive prompt veterinary attention when required and an injury as severe as this, should have been addressed immediately.’

Further investigations are being out by Chief Inspector Dowling and a case file on the matter is being prepared.

Sharon Power from the IHWT said the vet had cut away most of the infection.

‘ The wound may have been caused by scrap metal and she may have injured herself.’

‘The injury was at least three weeks old, but the vet did a great job. We’re just treating it now with a spray so hopefully she will have her foal in a few weeks.’
