WOODBROOK BRAY AVONDALE CC 4-5 1-6

A NEW competition this year in Wicklow Schools was the junior B girls football league.

It was organised by Laura Griffin of CCM and proved to be very successful.

The final was played in Woodbrook on Tuesday between Woodbrook College and Avondale CC.

The two teams were very evenly matched with both sides attacking from the start.

At half-time Woodbrook held a narrow lead of 2-2 to 1-2.

Avondale made a big effort at the start of the second half but found it difficult to score against a fine Woodbrook defence in which goalkeeper Aoife Mohan excelled.

Woodbrook added 1-1 in breakaway moves but Avondale now started picking off points and with 15 minutes gone the score was 3-3 to 1-5.

Avondale continues to press but could only add one more point while Woodbrook added 1-2 to their tally.

When referee John Doherty blew the final whistle Woodbrook were deserving winners.

This is an historic first trophy in Girls football won by the Woodbrook school (formerly St Brendan’s College).

Apart from Aoife Mohan they were well served by Toni Ceno, Ella Maree, Lauren Cheevers, Maja Knapik, Eve O’Brien and Niamh Carry.

Avondale had good defenders in Shauna Dickenson and Naobh Concaigh while Jessica Traynor did well in attack.

Semi-final wins for Temple Carrig and St Kevin’s

The two semi-finals of the boys Junior football A championship were played on Monday with Temple Carrig School Greystones proving too strong for the holders Colaiste Bhride Carnew and St Kevin’s CC Dunlavin getting the better of Colaiste Chill Mhantain. The Temple Carrig v Carnew game was played in Greystones and was very even for the first 20 minutes but the Temple Carrig forward line got into top gear after that to run out comfortable winners against a young Colaiste Bhride side.

St Kevin’s CC Dunlavin 3-10, Colaiste Chill Mhantain 1-9: This game was played in Laragh in heavy rain.

The first half was keenly contested.

Colaiste Chill Mhantain looked the stronger side in this half and led by 1-6 to 1-5 at half time, the goals coming from Sam Gough of St Kevin’s and Kevin Leonard of CCM.

Both teams had their moments in the second half also.

A turning point was when a high ball dropped under the CCM crossbar leaving their keeper Chris Doyle with the only option to bat it down but St. Kevin’s substitute Dylan Dunning was on hand to net from close range.

This gave the Dunlavin school the momentum and Sean Doyle soon added another goal with a fine shot.

CCM pushed hard for the goals they now needed but had to settle for the final point of the game.

There were strong performers for St. Kevin’s in Mark Murtagh and Rory Martin in defence while Joe Mills who scored 0-4 was a constant threat to the CCM backs.

Players that stood out for a CCM side who were short some of their stars due to injury, were Ross Quinn, Toby Lee Curran, Mark Evans and Ryan Kavanagh.
