NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Loads of football was played last weekend despite the continuous days of heavy rain. Nevertheless, there was a break in the weather, and we got some football on.

Pride of place this week goes to the under-12s team who secured the Division 2A League title after a humdinger in Newtown against fellow title contenders Avonmore FC the team got a great start with two goals inside the opening minutes from Cathal O’Toole and Jake Robertson. Midway through the half the away side pulled a goal back but Newtown restored their 2-goal cushion just before half time when O’Toole scored his second goal. As was expected the away side came out strong in the second half and they again made it a one goal game after indecision in the Newtown defence. However, within minutes O’Toole scored his hat trick and Newtown’s fourth. Keira Farrelly made it five when she got the final touch after a corner kick to score. Avonmore kept Newtown on their toes with two well taken goals in the dying minutes, but Brooklyn Doyle got the Newtown sixth goal in injury time to calm any last-minute nerves and the team had clinched the title with a game to spare on a 6-4 scoreline. On the day it was a great team effort and the squad was: Ben Synnott, Cillian Coffey, Cormac Chance, Keira Farrelly, Rose Kelly Tynan, Scott McKenna, Dayle Carthy, Dylan Dunleavy, Brooklyn Doyle, Jake Robertson, Cathal O’Toole, Evan Fahey and PJ Duffy. Well done to all the players and their coaches John Dunleavy and Dave McGuirk and many thanks to all the parents and supporters for their support this season. The team is still in contention in both the Cup and the shield.

In other action our under-8s made the long trip to Coolboy and they put in a super performance on the day. Special mention to Reece Kearns, Eoin Ledwidge and Tommy Ryan, who were among those players who starred on the day.

Our under-9s played out a tremendous game of football at home to Rathnew in the rain. Bobby Spillane was the man of the match in a great team display.

Our 10’s found the going tough away to a strong St Anthony’s Green team. Leon O’Connor scored the Newtown goal. The under-11s produced an excellent display with a 3-1 away win over Arklow United Stars. William Valentine gave us the lead with a shot come cross inside the first two minutes. Ryan Collins added a neat finish for goal number two midway through the half. The team was controlling the game, but the home team scored to make it 2-1 in what was very soft goal on our part. We restored our two-goal lead when Aidan Heffernan finished to the net after Pat Carey’s initial effort had been saved. On the day Kacey Kelly, Mikey Synnott and Aaron Roy were among the players who played well on the day.

Our ever-popular Development Squad returned in the last few weeks after the summer break. All boys and girls from five to seven years are very welcome to attend and can contact any coach or committee member for further information. Depending on weather conditions, this determines if the DS goes outdoors/ indoors.

Our Last Man Standing competition completed week two last weekend. After eight players exiting in week one, week two turned out to a game changer as no less than 79 of our players exited the competition after their selections Manchester City and United, West Ham, Norwich, Sheffield United, Watford and Spurs all failed to win their respective games. There will be no fixtures next weekend as it is an International break. Week three fixtures will be for the weekend of Sat.19th/Sun. October 20 and we will have 41 Players at the starting line. All selections must be with the secretary on or before 9 p.m. on the Thursday prior to the weekend fixtures. The Prize Pot will be €500. Thank you everyone for your continued support. Rules of the competition are available on request or are on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

We have a total of five players from the club celebrating their birthday in the coming week and they are Kian Lofts, Oscar Tarnogrodzki, Noah Campbell from the Development Squad, Reece Kearns from the under-eights and Seán Miranda from the under-10s. Happy birthday guys from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.

On a sadder note the club would like to extend their sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Elizabeth (Cissie) Robertson (née Tyndall) who sadly passed away last week. Cissie is the mother of well-known Newtown native and local soccer legend Gordon Robertson. May she rest in peace.
