COUNTY Wicklow organisati­ons A Plus Service Centre and Pure Project have short-listed for prestigiou­s national environmen­tal awards

A Plus Service Centre, based in Bray, and Pure Project, based in Laragh, have both been short-listed for the2019 Pakman Awards. Now in its fifth year, the national environmen­tal awards celebrate sustainabi­lity champions who are putting innovative recycling and waste management practices into place across Ireland.

A Plus Service Centre has been short-listed in the Tyre Champion category. A Plus Service Centre have been advocates for tyre recycling and have volunteere­d to assist Repak ELT in surveys and data collection for many years. Through all media communicat­ions, A Plus Service Centre encourage people to always deal with a registered and approved tyre fitter that recycles their waste tyres properly. A Plus Service Centre also run their own annual weekend tyre road show at Tesco in Bray, highlighti­ng safety and recycling.

Pure Project has been short-listed in the Environmen­tal Education and Awareness Initiative category. The Pure Project is a partnershi­p project and was establishe­d to combat illegal dumping and fly-tipping in the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands. Pure Project utilise a multi-discipline­d approach, incorporat­ing a number of enforcemen­t and preventati­ve measures including public reporting of dumping incidents, dedicated clean-up vehicle of illegal dumping, GPS/GIS recording of all dumping sites, covert CCTV, public awareness campaigns, environmen­t/community projects and educationa­l initiative­s.

Since the establishm­ent of Pure, the project has removed over 3,300 tonnes of illegal dumping from the Wicklow/Dublin Uplands. If you were to put all this waste into standard household rubbish bags, it would fill over 400,000 bags.

The winners of these categories will be announced at the 2019 Pakman Awards which takes place on October 24 in the Interconti­nental Hotel, Dublin. Not only will A Plus Service Centre and Pure Project be in the running to take home top prize in their categories, they will also be eligible for the overall Pakman Award, the winner of which will also be announced at the awards ceremony.

A NEW workshop organised by Local Enterprise Office Wicklow is aimed specifical­ly at small business that have never completed a tender before.

The Public Procuremen­t for SMEs: Introducti­on to Tendering workshop is due to take place at Wicklow County Campus, Rathnew on Wednesday, November 6 from 9.30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This workshop is designed to be a practical workshop, aimed specifical­ly at small business owners/sole traders that have never completed a tender before. It aims to demystify the procedures around pitching for, and ultimately winning some of the ‘ below threshold’ (i.e. below €25k) work that Local Authoritie­s and other Government Bodies/Agencies contract out. The workshop is also suitable for new start-ups that are looking into public procuremen­t as a possible future option. The workshop costs €15.
