Avoca BINGO

Bingo is played every Wednesday night in Avoca Community Hall at 8.30 p.m., run by the New Avoca Hall Committee. Great jackpot prizes. Aughrim YOGA WITH YVONNE

Yoga classes with Yvonne continue in Aughrim community sports complex every Monday morning at 9.30-10.45 and Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m. to 9.15 p.m. A New six-week course commences for Wednesday night class on November 4 €60 for six-week course or €13 drop in rate.

Aughrim ICA are running a table quiz in O’Toole’s Pub on Friday night, November 8, The quiz will start at 9.30 and should be a fun evening.

BLESSING AND UNVEILING OF CROSS.

The blessing and unveiling of the Cross to commemorat­e the Year of the family and the visit of Pope Francis to Ireland took place in brilliant sunshine on Jim’s Way on last Sunday.

The interdenom­inational ceremony was conducted by Fr Dermot Byrne, Fr David Fleming and Lay Parish Reader Janet Kirwan before a large crowd from the whole community. Chair. of the Cross Committee Kit Keogh outlined the background to the project and thanked the landowners and all the community for their support in order to make this undertakin­g a great success.

The ladies on the committee Mona Dillon, Kay Leeson and Teresa Byrne cut the ceremonial ribbon on the day and all adjourned to the Sports Complex for tea and cakes. A big thank you to all who helped out with cakes, buns and sandwiches on the day.

GAA NEWS

Our under-17 Derry Gaels football team played St Pat’s in the minor football B championsh­ip last Sunday in the County Grounds. Despite putting up a strong performanc­e they lost out by four points. in the end to a St Pat’s.

It’s all systems go for our Race Nite which takes place in Paddy’s Bar on Saturday, November 2, race cards and horses are available from all committee members. Please come along and support this annual fundraiser for the club.

TAI CHI/QI GONG CLASSES

Learn gentle flowing healing movements that relieve stress, improve flexibilit­y and mobility. Tai Chi and Qi Gong Classes are commencing on Wednesday evening, September 4, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Aughrim Sports and Leisure Complex. The cost is €80 for a block of eight classes. Beginners Welcome.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT

Line Dancing is on every Fridays from 11-midday in the local Parish Hall. It is a very enjoyable way to pass an hour. Oklahoma is on the NCH on Saturday, November 16, The cost will be approximat­ely €50 for ticket and bus. Any suggestion to make Active Retirement more active in the community would be appreciate­d. Monday morning walks continue at 10.30 a.m., with coffee and a chat afterwards.

LOTTO

The numbers 14, 18, 22 and 23 were drawn in this week’s Aughrim Sports club lotto October 14 the jackpot was not won. There was one match three Elsie and Garry, Main Street. The jackpot was not won. The jackpot is €2,400. The weekly lotto supports Aughrim camogie club, Aughrim GAA club, Aughrim Rangers Soccer club and Aughrim sports complex. People, who support the weekly lotto are lending support to the local sports clubs who are very much part of the community.

Coolgreany-Johnstown TRACTOR/CAR/ TRUCK ROAD RUN

The Local Road Run in conjunctio­n with the Gap Club has been organised for Sunday, October 27, starting with registrati­on at 10.30 a.m., in Coolgreany and moving off at midday, The run will travel towards Arklow, Aughrim, The Tocher, and back by Wicklow Gap, and concluding at the Coolgreany Inn for refreshmen­ts and a big raffle. The entry fee is €20 Per Vehicle, with the proceeds going towards the Jimmy Kinsella (Wicklow Gap) Fund. The Organising Committee are appealing for massive support for this very worthy cause.

COOLGREANY DRAMA

Back by popular demand. A hilarious night’s comedy for only €7. Coolgreany Drama are reprising their hilarious one-act play – A Beginner’s Guide to Madness – at St Mogue’s Hall, Inch on Tuesday, October 22, and Thursday 24 at 8 p.m.

This play was a huge hit with audiences when it was presented last month in St Mogue’s, so this is a final opportunit­y to see it before it starts on the One Act all-Ireland circuit at the end of October. Written by Barry McKinley and directed by Sally Stevens, this is a fast-paced absurd comedy centring on a stressedou­t New Yorker, Josephine, and her struggles with her husband, her therapist, some other weird characters and, believe or not, a walrus in her apartment building.

Can she live happily every after? These and other questions will be answered on the night. The cast is – Eadaoin Ni Lionain; Norah Finn; Eamonn O’Sheil; Niall Hunter; Ned Dempsey; Nicola Conroy, Denise Moules and Richard Lister.
