Purple House hosts talk on nutrition and cancer

- By MARY FOGARTY

PURPLE House Cancer Support Centre will hold a public information talk on ‘Food, Nutrition & Cancer - What We Know Now’, with Dr Mary Flynn, CORU registered dietitian.

The free talk will take place on Wednesday, November 6, in the Glenview Hotel at 7 p.m.

Google ‘food, nutrition and cancer’ and in a few seconds you will have access to over 250 million articles describing what to eat to ‘prevent cancer’, ‘stop cancer spreading’ or ‘cure’ it altogether!

The deluge of information available is mesmerising, according to a statement from Purple House.

‘Compelling suggestions to look for miracle foods that cure cancer are added distractions, which open up millions of additional materials in a never-ending maze of scientific evidence, fad notions and conflicting advice,’ they say.

‘In reality, eating well to reduce cancer risk is doable by everyone in Ireland – and is well backed up by excellent scientific evidence.’

Dr Flynn will explore every aspect of such healthy eating habits at the event. She will talk about what foods are best, how they protect against cancer, and what are the best cooking methods.

The highest quality evidence in the world ( World Cancer Research Fund) will be used to focus in on what’s best about our eating habits in Ireland. The myriad of different food choices that can be part of a healthy eating pattern will be described.

In reality, reducing cancer risk through food comes in many different ways – using many different foods eaten in many different patterns.

There will also be a discussion with the audience.
