Works ongoing at harbour area for school cycle path

- By MARY FOGARTY

Work is still under way to complete the cycle track and footpath linking the harbour to new schools Ravenswell and Coláiste Ráithín.

Work started on the morning of Monday, October 7, and was expected to take around two weeks to complete at that point.

The route will only initially be open to cyclists and pedestrians for one hour in the morning and one hour in the afternoon/evening to facilitate school hours. A spokesman for Wicklow County Council said that they do wish to extend the hours. Consultation with stakeholders is ongoing. There was an initial delay to the start of the project due to insurance issues which were resolved before contractors started work.

‘Once it is opened for schools, it is my objective to progress to being fully opened,’ said Cathaoirleach of Bray Municipal District Steven Matthews. ‘I will continue to work with Irish Rail, Department of Education, Wicklow County Council, the NTA and landowners to see this completed.’ There was a false start after work was expected to begin in August, to have the underpass open for the start of the school year.

The underpass will provide pedestrian and cycling linkage from the Dublin Road through to the harbour and seafront cycle path. It will also have access from the Ravenswell Road River Walk through the same route to harbour and seafront.

The cycle path through the Harbour and under the rail bridge was a condition of planning permission for the new schools and was funded by the NDFA under the schools building program.
