VOLUNTEER AWARD FOR THERESA

-

GREYSTONES Athletic Club coach and secretary Theresa Kinane has been honoured at the ‘Volunteers in Sport Awards’.

The Federation of Irish Sport recognised a volunteer from each county at the ceremony held in Farmleigh House last Wednesday, in association with EBS.

Theresa received the Wicklow sports volunteer of the year award for her commitment to Greystones Athletic Club from Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin. She also received a donation of €250 for the club from EBS.

Theresa has been a stalwart of athletics in Co Wicklow, in Leinster and nationally for over 22 years.

In January 1997, together with a band of helpers, she established Greystones and District AC. Since then, she has been Hon Secretary and Competitions Secretary of the club, amongst other coaching roles. Theresa has been described as someone who has gone above and beyond for athletics at every level from local to national.

Greystones Athletic Club caters for athletes of all ages, and from beginners to internationals. Training groups include little athletics, Fit4Life, road running and specialist coaching groups for endurance, sprints, hurdles, throws and jumps. The club currently competes in a number of competitions from county to international level.

The Volunteers in Sport Awards were created to recognise the contributions, commitment and dedication of the 450,000 volunteers who give their time to Irish sport each year. This equates to approximately 37.3 million hours of volunteering across Ireland’s 14,000 registered sports clubs and associations.

A total of 34 awards were presented at the ceremony, including 32 county-level awards, an overall ‘outstanding contribution’ award and a ‘ team of volunteers’ award. Swim Ireland’s Mary Dunne received the outstanding contribution award and Limerick based ‘Women on Wheels’ received the ‘ team of volunteers’ award.
