Riley survives coma with plenty of help from animal lovers

- By MARY FOGARTY

KAREN Tiernan of Wicklow Kennels and Cattery in Kilbride has suspended donations after a massive outpouring of support for a fundraising campaign for her sick dog, Riley.

Riley was admitted to UCD last Monday after accidentally ingesting muscle relaxants. With the cost running into thousands, Newtown native Karen set up a gofundme.ie appeal for help. Donations came flooding in, reaching over €4,000.

The dog, who despite her impressive size was just born last April, got at a package containing medication for back pain. The postman had delivered it along with another package of dog and cat treats.

Karen rushed Riley to the vets straight away, and to the UCD pet emergency that evening.

The hope was that she would recover from the poisoning overnight as her body processed the drugs. However, the vet called from UCD in the middle of the night. Riley’s breathing was getting more shallow and she needed ventilation.

The cost rose to €1,500 over the first 24 hours, and Karen was told that it could exceed €5,000 over the forthcoming days as Riley was kept alive so that her body could process the poisoning.

Karen, unable to pay, decided to appeal for help in order to avoid letting Riley go.

Animal lovers came forward in huge numbers, ensuring that the dog would have the care she needed.

The beloved dog continued to improve, and was well enough to return home on Thursday afternoon.

‘ The huge amount donated will cover the veterinary care,’ said a relieved Karen. ‘ Thanks to everyone who donated.’
