‘HOLYHEAD Santa’ was the guest of honour at the switching on of the Christmas lights last Saturday evening in Greystones.
Santa worked his magic and managed to keep the relentless rain at bay. He stayed on-site to meet every single child who wished to have a chat with him, and was thrilled to greet the kids of Greystones as the Christmas season gets under way.
With his own elves unable to spare the time away from the workshop, 12 local children volunteered to take on the role for the day and escorted Santa from Whale Theatre to the park for the event.
The people of the town were invited to Burnaby Park from 4 p.m., for festive entertainment all led by MC Paul Byrne. They came in huge numbers for a wonderful evening of music and festive cheer.
The Coláiste Chraobh Abhann school choir performed at the start of the event, before an address by Cllr Tom Fortune, Cathaoirleach of Greystones Municipal District.
Then local clergy performed an ecumenical service, and Greystones Players performed a comedy sketch.
Meanwhile, the theatre group is preparing for their sold-out play ‘A Christmas Carol’. The play will be on at Whale Theatre from December 5 to 8, with the option to join the waiting list at whaletheatre.ie.
The crowd then heard from a spokesperson for Greysotnes 2020, before a performance by Holyhead Male Voice Choir.
The lights were then switched on, and Santa arrived to greet the boys and girls.
The display includes over 1km of icicle lights throughout the town and two 30-foot Christmas trees, each adorned with 3,000 lights, one at the train station and one at the marina.
The Holyhead Male Voice Choir once again treated the people to a beautiful performance to finish the event.
The choir was in town as part of the Holyhead Greystones twinning celebrations held over the weekend.
They went on to perform a joint concert with the Newtownmounkennedy Male Voice Choir, which took place at the Parkview Hotel in Newtown and was a huge success.
