Santa is making his way to village of Enniskerry

- By MARY FOGARTY

CHRISTMAS starts in Enniskerry this weekend, with Santa arriving to light the tree lights at 5 p.m. on Sunday, December 1, in the centre of the village.

Santa will arrive in ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’, turn on the lights, and meet and greet children in his grotto at the Schoolhouse for Art.

Organisers believe this car was one of the six cars used in the production of the 1968 movie. One is located in New Zealand, another in the United States, and two have been scrapped. There will be a chance to win a unique outing in the car, with a raffle organised by the Enniskerry Business Association. The raffle supports the ongoing maintenance of the lights that hang from the eaves of the shops. Other prizes include a village hamper, a Christmas tree, and a variety of gift vouchers. Tickets can be bought in the shops of the village and from elf helpers on the night.

A canopy will be in position to keep visitors dry so that, if it rains, everyone can enjoy music, face painting and more.

A postbox for North Pole mail will be positioned at the phone box.

There will be late night shopping and dining as well as a Christmas pop up.

On Saturday, November 30, there will be a street carnival with the journey of Mary and Joseph from St Mary’s Church through the village at 4.30 p.m.

They will travel by donkey and visit the Powerscourt Arms and Enniskerry Inn before finding refuge at Patrick’s Church, where there will be a live crib. The event will include craft stalls, food stalls, elves’ workshops, mince pies, and fun and games.

The following weekend there will be an art exhibition and craft fair in the heart of the village, including free parking at the Bog Meadow.

Curtlestown By Candlelight will take place on the evening of Saturday, December 7, presented by a local and nationally recognised and musically acclaimed Doherty family. Tickets are for sale from Curtlestown School Office.

On Saturday and Sunday, December 14 and 15, St Mary’s Church will host a ‘Choral Feast’, headed by soprano Niamh Murray with the Enniskerry Concert Choir. Tickets are available from 01 2760030 or 01 2021882.

KEEP Enniskerry Connected will host a public meeting on Wednesday, November 27, at St Mary’s & St Gerard’s School at 7.30 p.m.

The meeting will include updates on the bus services, building and development concerns, N11 developments and safety issues.

All members of the community are invited to share their views at the meeting.

Elected members of the council and Dáil are expected to attend.

Information on all of the issues will be shared at the event.
