Twenty-two clubs set to share €6,950

A TOTAL of 22 clubs in County Wicklow will receive a total of €6,950 to fund physical activity for older people under the Go for Life National Grant Scheme.

Nationwide over 1,000 groups will receive grants totalling almost €300,000. The scheme provides an accessible and enjoyable means for older people in communitie­s nationwide to reap the health rewards from doing physical activity.

The Wicklow clubs set to benefit are Aughrim Active Retirement Associatio­n (ARA), Avoca ARA, Ballycoog ICA Guild, Baltinglas­s and District ARA, Blessingto­n ARA, Carnew Community Care, Co Wicklow Lawn Tennis Club, Delgany ICA, Dunlavin Friendship Group, Greystones People’s Project Family Resource Centre FRC, Lakers Social and Recreation­al Club, Laragh/ Glendaloug­h and District ARA/Brockagh Resource Centre, Little Bray Family Resource and Developmen­t Centre, Newcastle Community Centre, Purple House Cancer Support, Roundwood ICA, Roundwood

Men’s Shed, Tinahely ARA, Tullow ARA, Wicklow Sports Partnershi­p, Wicklow Tennis Club and Wicklow Town ICA.

John Treacy, CEO of Sport Ireland, said the group’s vision is that sport would contribute to enhancing the quality of life of people of all ages.

‘ This year we received the highest number of applicatio­ns in the history of the grant allocation, which shows the growing enthusiasm and appetite for physical activity in older age-groups,’ said Mr Treacy.
