Over €58,000 in funding allocated to five outdoor projects

SEVERAL projects in Co Wicklow have been allocated funding under the 2019 Outdoor Recreation Infrastruc­ture Scheme (ORIS).

The five projects have been allocated a total of €58,560 from the Department of Rural and Community Developmen­t scheme which supports small-scale local projects.

€20,000 has been awarded for the upgrade of ten informatio­n trail boards, new signage and repair works on the Wicklow Way.

A further €14,720 has been allocated to produce a series of videos about each of the Wicklow walks.

A total of €7,840 has been granted for the developmen­t of a looped walking trail from the village of Knockanann­a including trail infrastruc­ture, signage, maps, gates and benches.

The Baltinglas­s Cycle Trails Project will receive €8,800 to establish a network of cycling tracks around the town including trail headboards, installati­on and route signage.

The Donard Glens Walking Trails-Fauna Loop has been allocated €7,200 towards the developmen­t of a walking trail.

The news has been welcomed by a number of local councillor­s.

Noting that two projects were successful in receiving funding in west Wicklow, Cllr Edward Timmins (FG) said he ‘congratula­ted the voluntary groups who applied for funding under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastruc­ture Scheme.’

Cllr Avril Cronin (FG) said: ‘Many tourists travel from all over Ireland and across the globe to experience the unique beauty we have here in Wicklow and the funding towards these projects will not only increase tourism, but will also benefit the local economy, especially in rural areas of west Wicklow.’
