Over €58,000 in funding allocated to five outdoor projects
SEVERAL projects in Co Wicklow have been allocated funding under the 2019 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS).
The five projects have been allocated a total of €58,560 from the Department of Rural and Community Development scheme which supports small-scale local projects.
€20,000 has been awarded for the upgrade of ten information trail boards, new signage and repair works on the Wicklow Way.
A further €14,720 has been allocated to produce a series of videos about each of the Wicklow walks.
A total of €7,840 has been granted for the development of a looped walking trail from the village of Knockananna including trail infrastructure, signage, maps, gates and benches.
The Baltinglass Cycle Trails Project will receive €8,800 to establish a network of cycling tracks around the town including trail headboards, installation and route signage.
The Donard Glens Walking Trails-Fauna Loop has been allocated €7,200 towards the development of a walking trail.
The news has been welcomed by a number of local councillors.
Noting that two projects were successful in receiving funding in west Wicklow, Cllr Edward Timmins (FG) said he ‘congratulated the voluntary groups who applied for funding under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.’
Cllr Avril Cronin (FG) said: ‘Many tourists travel from all over Ireland and across the globe to experience the unique beauty we have here in Wicklow and the funding towards these projects will not only increase tourism, but will also benefit the local economy, especially in rural areas of west Wicklow.’
