AUGHRIM bade a fond farewell recently to one of its well-known and loved residents, Teresa Lambert.

Known as Teasie, Teresa lived for many years in the historic Old Forge at the River Ow by the Aughrim Bridge. A deeply respected member of the community, she was the last of the Caulfield family, passing away at the age of 93.

Teresa was one of five children and the family lived for a time in Bray before moving to Aughrim.

Her father, Phillip, was the blacksmith at the Forge and took care of shoe repairs for horses and donkeys, ironworks and cartwheel repairs. Shaped like a granite horseshoe, the historic forge was built in 1873 and has attracted many international visitors who admire its design. Teresa’s brothers, the late Johnnie and the late Tom also worked in the forge for a time. Her sister Nancy spent many years in America while Peg moved to Dublin.

Teresa was famous for her good humour and fantastic memory. She loved to eat out, with the Woodenbridge Hotel a particular favourite of hers. Teresa was also a big sports fan who enjoyed everything from Ladies GAA to Ireland’s international matches. Since the 1970s, she had made an annual pilgrimage to Lourdes with the local parish and later, accompanied by her niece.

She was a familiar sight in Aughrim village when out walking with her trolley. She is also remembered for the care she gave to her late son Pat. Throughout her life, there were many visitors to the Old Forge.

Teresa, wife of the late Paddy and mother of the late Pat, is deeply regretted by her stepdaughter Betty and family, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Her funeral took place at Sacred Heart Church, Aughrim with burial afterwards in Macreddin upper Cemetery. May she rest in peace.
