Double gold for Alan at international event

-

ALAN MILEY’S star continues to rapidly rise to new heights with the Dunlavin athlete winning double gold for Ireland at the International Schools Combined Events Championships in Glasgow last weekend.

The St Kevin’s CC student won individual and team gold medals in the Intermediate section and he wasn’t the only Co. Wicklow star on the national team as Adam Nolan from Baltinglass and North Wicklow Educate Together student Grainne O’Sullivan also returned home with medals, with the Scoil Chonglais student picking up a team silver and Grainne taking a bronze with the under-16 girls team.

Adam Nolan was just pipped for an individual bronze medal in the Junior boys as he finished in fourth place, a mere six points behind his Welsh counterpart in third.

Alan Miley’s achievement is a significant one. This is only the second time in history of competition that an

Irish athlete, male or female, has won an individual gold in this competition.

The multi-talented fifth-year student competed in 60m hurdles, shot putt, 200m long jump and a grueling 800m on the way to securing his beautiful pair of gold medals.

The distance/time in these events equate to points and the athlete with highest points total wins, so it really is a competition for the elite athlete.

The team comprises of four athletes with the three best athlete points been combined to find the highest scoring team and Alan’s amazing points total of 3615 was the deciding factor of the Irish team taking the gold.

All three Co. Wicklow athletes qualified for the international event thanks to their superb performances in Athlone IT recently where Alan and Adam won gold and Grainne took home the silver medal in the under-16 category.
