Fundraising cycle in memory of Jim

- SEENAND HEARD

A memorial cycle for Crumlin Children’s Hospital fundraiser, supporter and friend,

Jim McCawl, will take place from Jack White Inn at Junction 19 on the M11, Co.

Wicklow on Saturday, December 7, at 11am to raise funds for some of Ireland’s sickest children.

Retired Detective Garda Jim McCawl, who was stationed in Arklow Garda

Station for many years and lived locally, traveled to

Portugal in September last as part of a group of around

20 Irish people for a weeklong cycle in aid of Crumlin

Children’s Hospital. Jim passed away unexpectedly in Faro. Jim attended over

25 overseas cycling events and organised numerous other fundraising events with his Garda colleagues in Arklow. He’s been fundraising for sick children since 1993.

Jim’s friends who are organising the cycle event are encouraging everyone to get involved. There is an adult looped route of 40km and a children’s looped route of 3km. The adult route will be split into a leisure and active cycle, depending on your cycling level. You can register for the event on the day at Jack White’s Inn in Brittas Bay from 10am. The entry fee is €25 for adults and €5 for children. If you would like a sponsorship card before the event contact Frances on 087 2598363.

‘Jim was the kind of man who wanted to help everybody,’ Frances McDevitt, long term fundraiser and friend of Jim, said.

‘He was so kind. I got to know him about 39 years ago and he asked me to get involved in fundraising.

‘Jim has always been a hugely active fundraiser, from our annual dance event that lasted 28 years, golf events, cycling and more. He was a dear friend and he is greatly missed by so many people.’

Frances is encouraging people to come to the Jim McCawl Memorial Cycle – ‘If you don’t want to take part in the cycle you can turn up and cheer on the cyclists. All support will be greatly appreciated on the day.’

Anyone taking part in the cycle who is not part of Cycling Ireland Organisation will have to pay €5 on the day for a one-day Cycling Ireland license.

Don’t forget to bring your helmet or you won’t be allowed to cycle on the day.
