Another one gets away from gallant Wicklow

-

KILKENNY RFC WICKLOW RFC 31 22

WICKLOW’S Senior men travelled to take on Kilkenny RFC in a crucial Leinster League game on Saturday last.

Both teams were at the lower end of the table and desperate to get the win that would give them the momentum to begin to pull away from the relegation zone.

Wicklow’s backline continues to be decimated with injury and the team is lacking in confidence and struggling to put together the type of performance they know they are capable of.

Wicklow were slow to come out of the blocks on Saturday and an early penalty was followed up by a Kilkenny try and Wicklow found themselves trailing by eight poinbts to nil after ten minutes.

Another Kilkenny try after 17 minutes put e Kilkenny men up by 13 points to nil.

Ben Porter got Wicklow on the board with a penalty after some good play by both backs and forwards.

That good work was undone on the half hour mark when the men from the Marble city went ovwer for their third try to make it 18 - 3 on the half hour mark.

Wicklow fought back again with a brilliant break away try from Wes Wojnar. Porter added the extras and Wicklow were back in it at 18-10.

Just before half-time some excellent play from Wicklow saw an in form Alex Porter power over for a good try. The conversion was missed but it was game on at 18-15 at the break.

Ten minutes into the second half Mark Higgins went to the bin and Kilkenny knocked over the resultant penalty to make it 21-15. Fifteen minutes later Kilkenny got over for their fourth try to make it 28-15.

Wicklow to their absolute credit fought back and got over for their third try to make it 28-22 with five minutes left.

Unfortunately the dream comeback which this team richly deserves wasnt to be and a final Kilkenny penalty left the full-time score at 31-22. Another game we could have won but which ended up being devastating loss for this team.

Next week we travel to league leaders Ashbourne and will look to cause the upset of all upsets. If this team gets a bit of luck and plays to their ability anything is possible.

The club are asking their supporters to get behind the team and travel to Ashbourne to give them the support they need and deserve. Kick off is at 12.30pm for the seconds and 2pm for the firsts.
