We are delighted to welcome Joan and Karen from Music Generation back to our school this week to work with children in first, second, third and fifth class.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

As we continue with the wind down at the end of the season, some of our teams are tying up the loose ends of their season.

Our under-11s continued their experiment with the nine-a-side format with an excellent run out away to Wicklow Rovers White. Max Roche, Ryan Collins, William Valentine and Pat Carey were among the scorers on the day in an end to end game.

Games involving our under-nine, 10 and 13’s teams fell victim to the weather conditions. Also, as we know we have players currently training away with the under-12 and 13 WDSL Academy sides and now four of our 2009 players have been brought back for the next phase of under-11 Academy training which will commence in February 2020. Those four players are, Oisin Duffy, Albie Chance, Ryan McDonald and Leon O’Connor. Well done, lads.

Our ever-popular Development Squad continues every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. till 11 a.m. and is in the community centre. All boys and girls from five to seven years are very welcome to attend and can contact any coach or committee member for further information. We are also on the lookout for a couple of more coaches to help with the group.

We have a winner, or should I say winners of our Last Man Standing competition as the selections of our remaining two players both lost. Under the rules of our competition both Gus Fitzpatrick and Séamus O’Toole were the Last Man Standing and will share the prize pot of €500 and therefore receive €250 each. Gus had chosen Burnley, but they fell to Crystal Palace on a 2-0 scoreline, while Séamus picked Chelsea, but they suffered a surprise 0-1 defeat at home to West Ham. Thank you everyone for your continued support. We will do another competition early in the new year and we will notify every one of the start dates in due course.

We only have one player celebrating a birthday in the coming week and he is Max Synnott from the under-13 team. Happy birthday Max from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.

On a sadder note the club extends their sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Michael Purcell (St Patrick’s Road), Willie Byrne (Roundwood) and Agnes Ryan (née Kenny) (Tallaght) who all sadly passed away in the last week. May they all rest in peace.

LIGHTING UP FOR CHRISTMAS

Thank you to everyone for joining us to light up Newtownmountkennedy for Christmas.

Lots of fun was had with Carols from Newtown Primary School, dancing display from O’Regan School of Irish Dancing, yummy hot chocolate from the Scouts and tasty treats from the Parkview Hotel.

The man of the hour Santa switched on the lights and got to meet all the children in his grotto hosted by the Parkview Hotel. He whizzed back to the Northpole with his escort by the Gardaì and Newtown and Newcastle Men’s Shed.

A Massive Thank You to all our very generous sponsors throughout the town and community, who have made this all possible – remember to shop local.

All the wonderful team of people and groups who helped get the show on the road today, there are too many names to mention but without all the volunteers giving their time this would not have been possible.

*keep your eyes peeled for MORE lights going up this week around the town – slight delay due to the bad weather last week*
