Muggers target elderly women
TWO elderly women were mugged in Greystones over the past number of days.
The first incident occurred at Woodlands Court at around 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 7.
A woman was walking along and had her handbag taken from her shoulder. She had withdrawn a sum of €700 from the ATM prior to the incident.
On Monday evening, December 10, a woman was assaulted in her driveway and had her handbag stolen while taking her groceries in from her car.
In that case, the make of the car was unclear but it was small and white or off-white. The victim said that the attacker was around 20 years old. The driver of the car was older and larger.
Superintendent Padraic Powell said that gardai in Greystones are investigating both incidents.
He said that they have gathered a large amount of CCTV from the area and hope to bring both matters to a successful conclusion.
Supt Powell said that he would advise people to avoid carrying around any large sums of cash, and do their business by debit or credit cards if possible.
Anyone who witnessed the crimes or has any information regarding them, can contact Greystones Garda Station on 01 6665800.
Cllr Jennifer Whitmore described the incidents as ‘shocking’.
‘It is very shocking to hear about these attacks,’ said Cllr Jennifer Whitmore. ‘Having something like this happen to you is very frightening and it can have a long-term impact on your wellbeing and feeling of security. These incidents show that we need more gardai on the ground in the area - our community Gardai do a fantastic job but there simply isn’t enough of them. There needs to be significant investment in Garda resources so our communities can feel safe.’
