Wicklow minis round of their year in fine style
WICKLOW RFC’s minis’ welcomed their young counterparts from New Ross RFC to Ashtown Lane on Sunday morning.
The bitterly cold, windy conditions were counteracted by the fact that there was almost no rain resulting in a great fixture to bring 2019 to a close for the minis.
With teams taking part from U-8s up, hundreds of kids took to the field for some top class rugby.
The U-10s had a great day despite the cold. This is a relatively new fixture at this age grade and both clubs adjusted their numbers to facilitate four very competitive matches by mixing the teams.
This has happened in recent blitzes and the Wicklow players have really benefitted from playing with kids from other clubs with the full skill set of passing and support play very evident.
All four matches were very close and the fixture concluded with a very entertaining fifth match with a pure New Ross versus Wicklow game. All in all a great finish to the 2019 part of the season.
The U-10s will see out the rest of the year with training and the Aviva trip next Saturday. A full schedule of fixtures planned for 2020.
The U-12s fielded two teams and they met two very strong New Ross teams for a great display of running rugby which helped keep the cold at bay.
Both sides were very evenly matched and the high intensity games brought out the best in their rucking and passing skills resulting in some very well executed scores to thrill the spectators.
Wicklow’s U-12s had a busy weekend as they had been baking furiously for a fundraising cake sale in aid of their forthcoming Connacht tour.
The sale was a huge success and the people in Wicklow and Rathnew should keep an eye out for the minis in the days after Christmas when they will be collecting and recycling old Christmas trees. Details will be available on the club Facebook page www. facebook.com/WicklowRFC
