Avonmore pay the penalty

Shoot-out heartbreak after a thrilling cup encounter

O’Neill’s Leinster Junior Cup

It was a disappoint­ing weekend for the Wicklow League representa­tives in the O’Neill’s Leinster Junior Cup as all three bowed out at the third round stage.

Avonmore were edged out by Glynn Barntown in a remarkable clash at Casey Park on Saturday, with the side who ply their trade in the second tier in Wexford winning 5-4 on penalties after an incredible 6-6 draw.

Goalkeeper Dylan Furlong was the hero, pulling off a fantastic save in the shoot-out to deny Avonmore after an enthrallin­g contest.

Robert Dempsey and Allen Colegate both netted doubles for the hosts, while Rioghan Crosbie and Davo Miller also got in on the act, with Cian O hAnnáin (two), Ryan Cahill, Adam Tuke, Callum Pursey and Mark Miley replying.

On Sunday, St Peter’s succumbed 4-1 to St Paul’s Artane at Little Bray Community Centre, with Jake Kane netting for the hosts.

Cillian Gilligan scored a consolatio­n goal for Carnew as they lost heavily to

New Oak Boys, with the Carlow outfit running out 7-1 winners.

Andy McEvoy Premier Division

Glencormac United recovered from a 3-2 half-time deficit to storm to a 7-3 victory over St Anthony’s in their Premier Division clash at Ryder’s Field on Sunday. Goals from Mick Rooney, Shane Doyle and Patrick Woods gave the Saints the advantage at the break but United took complete control after the change of ends.

Josh O’Callaghan hit the back of the net four times for the winners, while Nathan Watters added a double and Sam O’Callaghan chipped in with a goal.

Pat O’Toole Division 1

Roundwood made in six wins from six on Sunday to move to the top of the Pat O’Toole Division 1 table.

The new leaders overcame Derry Rovers in a goal-fest, winning 8-5 thanks to an Allen Harris hat-trick, doubles from Tony Conway and Glen Hughes and a Ryan Burke strike.

Jason Coleman (two), Ian St Ledger,

Dan Murphy and Luke O’Connor all hit the back of the net for Rovers.

Aughrim Rangers’ winning run was ended by Avonmore, with Ryan Cahill, Cody Reid and Ollie Byrne getting their goals in a 3-1 victory. Craig Farrar found the net for Rangers.

Andy Doyle helped himself to a fourgoal haul as Conary United overcame Arklow Celtic 7-4. Jordan Kinsella (two) and Michael Murphy completed the scoring, while Mark Wolohan, Gary McLoughlin, Edwin Walker and Kevin O’Regan replied for Celtic.
