Wicklow Rose selection to take place this July

- By EIMEAR DODD

THE 2020 Wicklow Rose selection has been postponed due to coronavirus.

The event had been due to take place at the Arklow Bay Hotel on Saturday, April 18, however, organisers have confirmed it will now take place on Saturday, July 11.

Meanwhile, some of Wicklow’s Rose hopefuls had the chance to meet the current Rose of Tralee in Arklow recently.

Dr Sinéad Flanagan, 2019 International Rose of Tralee, commenced her nationwide tour of Ireland with a visit to Wicklow where she stayed at the Arklow Bay Hotel, home to the Wicklow Rose Selection. Some of the Wicklow Rose applicants had the opportunity to meet Sinead and ask some questions of her experience to date.

Sinead encouraged the Rose applicants who are taking part this year to enjoy the experience. Speaking during her visit, she said ‘I’m having the most incredible experience. Over the past five months, I’ve witnessed and celebrated community spirit all across Ireland, and in just a few weeks I’ll begin my international tour.

‘I had the opportunity to travel to Kolkata with the HOPE Foundation before Christmas which was a really challenging and rewarding experience; and in just a few days I’ll be travelling to Belarus with Chernobyl Children International and some of the 2019 Roses and Rose Escorts. To have all of these opportunities in the space of a few months is all down to the Rose of Tralee Festival. So if that sounds like something you’d be interested in, I’d really encourage you to apply this year.’

The search is underway to find the 2020 Wicklow Rose and young women from all over the county are invited to apply online ahead of this year’s Wicklow Rose Selection.

Lyn Moloney, Wicklow Rose co-ordinator, said, ’ The Rose of Tralee International Festival is the most incredible experience and I would encourage as many young women as possible to take part and become their local Rose. I guarantee them they will make incredible friends and have an amazing experience. Many people think that the Rose of Tralee festival is just one week long and they don’t realise that the Roses and Rose Escorts have so many incredible experiences throughout the whole year. All I can say to any young woman is to ‘go for it and apply!

‘ This year whoever is chosen as the Wicklow Rose will represent Wicklow live on Rte. We would encourage all interested ladies between 18 and 29 to apply and experience the wonderful journey that lies ahead.’

The Wicklow Rose committee is still inviting women aged between 18 and 29 to apply to the competition. For further information, call the Wicklow Rose Co-ordinator Lyn Moloney on 083 4631611 2505791 or Steve Cronly on 086 2505791.

The winner of the Rose of Tralee will be presented by lead sponsor of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Tipperary Crystal, with a bespoke tiara and perpetual trophy; along with a complete jewellery collection and a range of products from their giftware and homeware collections.

The winner will receive a new KIA car from McElligotts Tralee, with a world travel prize valued at €25,000 and a week long holiday from Kerry County Council.
