Children wear costumes to mark World Book Day
CHILDREN in schools and pre-schools all over north Wicklow dressed up as their favourite characters from literary fiction, to celebrate World Book Day.
The day took place last Thursday. St Mary’s & St Gerard’s in Enniskerry and St Laurence’s National School in Kindlestown were among those to participate in the initiative.
Young people and their teachers brought their imaginations to life with costumes inspired by the books they love.
Delgany Tidy Towns marked World Book Day by making donations of books to school libraries in Delgany, Greystones and Kilcoole.
The collection of books all focus on topics relating to nature, climate change and the environment.
‘ The project was inspired by our local river, the Three Trouts Stream, and supported by the Local Authority Waters Programme,’ said Delgany Tidy Towns member and Seanad candidate.
Tiona Hassett, coordinator of the Green Schools Committee in St Laurence’s National School expressed her gratitude on receipt of the books and has plans to set up a dedicated environmental book corner to help further increase awareness within the school.
‘Books are an incredible and creative way of engaging with children,’ said Zoe Woodward of Delgany Tidy Towns.
‘We believe the books will be a fantastic addition to local schools and will inspire pupils now and in the future by making them more aware of the environment, climate and surrounding nature.’
