New guidance issued for visitors walking in the Wicklow Uplands

-

NEW guidelines have been issued to walkers keen to enjoy the Garden County’s stunning scenery during this public health crisis.

As many take to the outdoors to get some fresh air in the open spaces of the County’s walking trails, Wicklow Uplands Council has issued a number of guidelines to enable visitors and locals to enjoy and experience the Uplands with consideration to others.

Brian Dunne, Coordinator of Wicklow Uplands Council, said ‘ the uplands are open and provide a huge number of choices for you and your loved ones to experience the outdoors during these challenging times. Our open spaces are more important than ever and we should all enjoy them responsibly and with respect for others in mind, that includes observing the guidelines on social distancing”

Offering advice to both locals and visitors, Mr. Dunne added, ‘ there are a wealth of trails and walks to choose from across the uplands. Whereas some are popular and well-known, many hidden gems are waiting to be explored.’

The Uplands Council is urging all visitors to dispose of all litter properly in line with the ‘Leave No Trace’ principles.

Meanwhile, visitors are also asked to consider where they are parking. The Uplands Council’s guidelines note that inconsiderate parking can create a number of challenges with vehicles often parked blocking private entrances, farmyards and working farm gates. Parking along narrow roadways may cause obstruction and prevent access to emergency services. Where appropriate, public transport should be considered.

The Wicklow Uplands Council has also warned that unfortunately parked vehicles in remote areas and popular tourist sites are occasionally targeted by criminals. They suggest valuables should be left at home or hidden out of sight.

Visitors are also being encouraged to practice responsible dog control. Dogs remain a key challenge not only for farmers and landowners, as the presence of dogs can startle sheep, wildlife and ground-nesting birds.

As many of the food businesses and hospitality options that ordinarily would support visitors to the uplands are now closed, the group advises visitors to bring food and drinks and dispose of them correctly afterwards.

Finally, the Council urges walkers to plan their activities by checking weather forecasts, wearing appropriate clothing, having adequate hydration and snacks. They should also respect the land owner’s wishes by closing gates and not damaging fences or private property.
