Taylor v. Serrano refixed for July 4 due to virus

-

KATIE TAYLOR’s undisputed world lightweight title defence against Amanda Serrano has been rescheduled for July 4, after Matchroom Boxing were forced to postpone a series of their events as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Taylor was due to meet longtime rival Serrano in a much-anticipated mega-fight in the Manchester Arena on May 2, on the undercard of Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin. It was to be KT’s first fight since defeating Christina Linardatou in November to become WBO super-lightweight champion.

However, that show has now been moved to July 4, as Matchroom Boxing were forced to rearrange three events that were pencilled in for May in the United Kingdom; the others being Lee Selby vs George Kambosos Jr. on May 9, and Oleksander Usyk vs Derek Chisora on May 23.

In a statement, the promoters said that the decision was made in the best interests of everybody involved.

‘The health and safety or the boxers, staff, event contractors and fans involved with our events remains the top priority for Matchroom Boxing and we thank everyone for their understanding,’ it read.

‘We look forward to bringing world class boxing events back to these shores as soon as it is safe to do so.’

While the date for their showdown may have changed, Taylor remains laser-focused on the task at hand and has said that her fight with Serrano promises to be career-changing for both women.

‘This is the best fighting the best, a fight that everybody wants to see. This is a very exciting fight not just for women’s boxing but for boxing as a whole. This is a fight that people want to see, the Bray-native told Sky Sports News.

‘It is a dangerous fight for both of us, and career-changing for both of us. Whoever wins this fight is cemented at number one in women’s boxing.

‘I go into every fight with the same mindset, nothing has changed. She obviously does an awful lot of talking and it will be the same for this fight. But I don’t want to get involved in anything like that.’
