Fianna Fail’s Pat is elected to Seanad Éireann
FIANNA Fáil’s Pat Casey has been elected to the Seanad after vowing to provide rural Wicklow with ‘a voice’ if he got elected.
He was moved to run for the Seanad after losing his Dáil and in reaction to the fact that all five TDs elected in the Wicklow constituency hailed from either Bray or Greystones.
‘I’m delighted to have been successful,’ said Senator Casey.
‘I think it’s important to have national representation for rural Wicklow. There is no rural representation for Wicklow in the Dáil as there is no TD from any political persuasion or political party outside of Bray and Greystones.
‘All five of County Wicklow’s TDs are from within a five mile radius of one another. It’s important that the rest of Wicklow is represented at a national level.’
He is still uncertain when he will be able to take up his seat in the Seanad as the whole country remains in lock-down for an undetermined amount of time.
‘We are in a completely different space than we were even just a month ago. What will be done to kick start the economy once the country isn’t any longer on lock-down?
‘I come from a business background and I think that can certainly be of assistance. We will need to look at different ways of getting the country and the economy moving again once restrictions are lifted and things start returning to normal.
Senator Casey is also critical of some TD’s decision to hold a Dáil meeting on Thursday, when the rest of the country is being told to stay at home.
‘Why bother sitting in the Dáil when public health advice is telling everyone else to stay at home? The meeting shouldn’t have taken place and I would question what it was all about.’
TWO people were admitted to hospital last Wednesday evening following a house fire on Ardee Street.
Fire crews from Bray and Greystones attended the blaze at approximately 6.30 p.m.
The two casualties, believed to be women, were treated for smoke inhalation and burns.
A technical examination of the scene was carried out and gardai said that that would determined the cause of any investigation.
