Bray Emmets helping hand

- By MARY FOGARTY

BRAY Emmets, along with other GAA clubs around the country, has put together a group of volunteers to help and assist those in need, collecting necessities such as food, prescriptions and fuel. ‘ These are challenging times but they will pass and we will become stronger than ever,’ said Bray Emmets in a statement.

The volunteers are willing to help out those most vulnerable in the community and those who need to self-isolate. They will be working with some local shops and supermarkets to get supplies out to people.

‘It’s going really well,’ said spokesman Dave Barry. ‘ The guards have been passing on people’s contact details to us. So we’ve had plenty of people looking for shopping, supplies, prescriptions and that kind of thing.’

There are about 50 volunteers ready to go out and get supplies to those who are in need.

‘We started this about a fortnight ago, but we’re just beginning to see an increase.’

This is since the government asked people who are over 70 or unwell not to go out to the shops.

‘A lot of people are off work and they would just like to help out as much as possible.’ Dave said that Gary Prunty of Bray

Emmets put out the call and the response was fantastic. A small number of people were selected to have their numbers used and to coordinate the rest of the volunteers.

‘It’s great to see everyone putting their shoulder to the wheel,’ said Dave.

He said that the volunteers will be taking every precaution as they go about their tasks, and will observe strict distancing when delivering items. They will wear their club gear so that they can be easily identified. Dave said that it’s also important to give a wave and check in to make sure people are alright.
