Calling all young sports reporters!

-

CALLING all young sports fans in Wicklow and beyond. With the playing fields quiet and leagues and championships on the shelf we’d like to provide an opportunity for you to win a championship off the field over the coming weeks.

We’re looking for young sports writers to file a match report of no more than 500 words from any sporting activity, real or imagined, and a photo of themselves in their club or county gear.

The report can be about last year’s county final, an imagined final game where Liverpool win the Premier League, Wicklow winning an All-Ireland, two flies running up a wall, or the last game you played before the coronavirus arrived. It can be about the whole game or just one late penalty to win the title or any other aspect of the sporting event you choose. Basically, it can be about anything you want and can be as long or short as you want but not more than 500 words. The most important thing is the writing.

The championships will be running along the lines of the GAA underage system, so there will be the usual grades, under-7s, 9s, 11s, 13s, 15s and under-17s.

All entries (where possible) will be published in the Wicklow People with the winner in each grade being published on the front page of the sport section. The winner of each grade will also receive a championship trophy and will be invited to take a premium seat in/on the pressbox/bank/ditch to report on an adult championship final in Wicklow in 2020 (or 2021 depending on how things work out) with their report appearing in the following edition.

So, put your sports writer’s hat on, loosen up those fingers and get writing. Humour is always welcome, drama is required and passion is demanded.

Email entries and photos to b.lawrence@peoplenews.ie by Friday, April 10, at 1pm. Early entries may appear in next Wednesday’s paper. And the best of luck!

Terms and conditions apply.
