Rathdrum ladies shine in Drimnagh

-

THE Rathdrum ladies basketball team laid claim to the Drimnagh Invitational Tournament for the fourth year in a row back in early May of 1994.

The ’Drum side did lose their opening game, against Fairwater by 21-17 after they failed to stop the outside shooting of their opponents.

But the second game, against hosts Drimnagh, saw a superb Rathdrum defence holding Drimnagh to just three points and winning by 17-3.

The following day Rathdrum found themselves having to beat Artane by three points of more to make the final. With an impressive defensive display, they had no problem in eliminating Artane from the play-off with a score of 28-10.

Rathdrum faced Fairwater, the team they had lost to in the first match, in the final. But they had become stronger as the competition progressed and although it was a tough battle the Wicklow side were always in the lead and won by a score of 45-26.

Rathdrum were also honoured with the most valuable player award, which went to Teresa Kelly. It was well deserved because, as with this tournament, she played every second of all 22 league games this season.

The club extends thanks to their substitute players: Claire Ward, Maureen Doyle, and Robin Wiedecker who is just 14 years of age. All three are still in secondary school but were able to compete with the top intermediate teams.

The Rathdrum team will hold their own tournament on Sunday, May 8, from 10am through Sunday afternoon at the Arklow Sports and leisure Centre. This will be a great opportunity to see Co. Wicklow’s only women’s basketball team in action against some of the top intermediate teams from Dublin.
