Leagues to finish but some cup competitions may fall

-

WDFL Chairman Michael Conlon says that the Premier 1, Division 2 and 3 will be completed where possible in the very narrow window of opportunity provided to finish the 2019/20 season but that some of the cup competitions are unlikely to be played.

The announcement on Facebook by the WDFL that matches will resume from July 18 was met with a real sense of relief and delight last Saturday morning.

‘The Wicklow League will resume matches on July 18. More info to follow,’ read the brief post on social media.

WDFL Chairman Michael Conlon said yesterday afternoon (Tuesday) that the WDFL will endeavour to get all leagues finished and that hopefully the Wicklow Cup and the divisional cups can be completed but that competitions such as the Charlie Bishop Cup and the Jim McLaughlin Cup are unlikely to be played due to the lack of time before the start of the new season on September 26.

All WDFL clubs have committed to play the rest of the season. However, Michael Conlon believes that there may be an issue with one or two that needs to be ironed out in the coming days.

Given the extremely narrow timeframe for the season to be completed, the WDFL Chairman also warned that games that are rained off or not played for whatever reason are very unlikely to be refixed.

News of the start on July 18 will have come as a massive relief to clubs all over the county with official training set to begin on June 29.

The Premier 1 league sees St. Peter’s in a commanding lead with 30 points after 11 games with Glencormac their nearest challengers on 19 points after eight games.

Michael Conlon confirmed that Division 2 is being split as planned with the top half being called Division 2 and the bottom half making up Division 3.
