Eric is over all winner of Round Ireland Yacht Race
July 2002
WITH all the yachts safely returned to Wicklow Sailing Club, apart from those that retired along the way, the overall result of the Round Ireland Yacht Race was calculated and this year’s winner was Eric Lisson taking first place in Cavatina.
It took Eric and his crew four days, 15 hours,24 minutes and11 seconds to complete the 704 nautical miles which made up the Round Ireland route.
Cavatina’s corrected time was four days, seven hours, nine minutes and33 seconds which put the yacht just over two and a half hours ahead of the defending champion, George Radley and Imp. Michael Greville and his crew in Hiippocampus took third place.
Although the record wasn’t broken by the wining boat, all the participating crafts that finished were back in Wicklow in the shortest time ever. Judging by the comments in the club-house, it was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved, despite some nasty weather at a couple of stages.
During the race, a very successful gala concert was held in the marquee in aid of Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin.
