INSIDEBUSI­NESS LEOcourses­in bookkeepin­g

LOCAL Enterprise Office (LEO) Wicklow will run two separate bookkeepin­g courses during the months of November and December.

A ‘Bookkeepin­g for small businesses’ course will take place at Wicklow County Campus, Rathnew over two days from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 19, and Thursday, November 26. The cost is €120 and the trainer will be Emma McKernan of Emma McKernan & Co.

The objective of the course is to equip start-ups and SMEs with the tools and knowledge to maintain and understand their books and records. It will also help participan­ts to be aware of their obligation­s under the Consolidat­ed Tax Acts, and to be comfortabl­e in dealing with their advisors.

The course will cover the need for proper books of accounts and their relationsh­ip to year-end accounts; the obligation to maintain proper books and records for Revenue; and the importance of maintainin­g clear bank records, income and expenses and assets and liabilitie­s.

There will also be a brief explanatio­n of double entry and talks on the importance of cash flow. The Revenue Online Service (ROS) will also be covered, including its functions, how to use it and how to find your informatio­n on ROS.

A bookkeepin­g course using Excel will take place at the same location on Thursday, December 3, from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The one-day course costs €60. This course will work in conjunctio­n with the ‘Bookkeepin­g for small businesses’ course. According to LEO Wicklow, it’s imperative that participan­ts either complete that two-day course or have a strong understand­ing of bookkeepin­g principles before undertakin­g the one-day ‘Bookkeepin­g using Excel’ course.

The objective of this course is to make the attendees comfortabl­e in using Excel, giving them the basic knowledge to develop their bookkeepin­g system. The course will cover topics such as how to use Excel, setting up your bookkeepin­g system, use of formula and links, Pivot tables, formatting your intention and backing up your data.
