GARY CRONIN knows that in the First Division, it is important to remain grounded. Don’t get carried away with the highs and don’t be overwhelme­d by the lows.

On Monday last, he witnessed Bray Wanderers completely outperform a well-fancied Longford Town side and then five days later, the Seagulls fell on Drogheda’s sword. Fans of the Co. Wicklow club may well have been happy with three points out of a possible six before a ball was kicked and Cronin knows this could well be a reoccurrin­g pattern in this competitiv­e second tier.

‘Not everything goes your way in football! We had a great night on Monday night and then after 15 minutes on Friday we’re wondering how we’re 2-0 down away to Drogheda. That’s the beauty of having everything recorded; you can go back and look at it and you analyse it and we were under a bit of pressure but we didn’t see it out like we did on Monday night. We’d a couple of individual errors and we’re 2-0 down.

‘We can’t dwell on it too much – we had time to recover and we have to move on. Our response on Friday was good I felt, we ended the first half well and we’d an excellent start to the second half. It was disappoint­ing to concede that third goal though because it killed off the game.’

Things may have worked out very differentl­y though. Just minutes after pulling a goal back, Callum Thompson broke from a corner and teed up Derek Daly but he spurned a wonderful opportunit­y.
