Borrow home energy saving kits from your local library

- By MYLES BUCHANAN

WICKLOW County Council Library Service has launched home energy saving kits and these will be available to borrow free of charge from local libraries.

Now that the cold autumn and winter months are here, householders will be thinking of cutting heating bills and saving energy. The kit comes in a case and contains a number of items to help people assess the energy efficiency of their home. A fridge/freezer thermometer gives guidance on the correct temperature for your appliance, while a radiator key can be used to bleed radiators and ensure optimum efficiency.

It also contains a thermal leak detector which will measure the temperature of your walls, floors, windows and ceilings, as well as identi

fying draughts and air leaks.

Also part of the kit is a plug-in energy monitor that will let people know how much energy their home appliances use, as well as calculating running costs.

Speaking at the launch of the kit, director of Services Michael Nicholson said: ‘Wicklow County Council is pleased to be involved with this very worthwhile and timely initiative. These home energy kits will give an insight into how much energy is being used in the home. They will help people become energy aware and give practical advice on how to reduce their energy use, their carbon footprint and most importantly their household bills.’

The kits are available for loan to current library members from each of Wicklow County Council’s 13 libraries.
