COLÁISTECHILL MHANTÁIN
RETIREMENT CELEBRATION
Friday, October 2, marked an important occasion in the life of Coláiste Chill Mhantáin as we bid farewell to our colleague, teacher and friend, Mr Séamus Diamond, as he retired from school-life.
Mr Diamond has made an enormous contribution to the life of the school, both in his teaching of English and in his interactions with students, parents and colleagues. His long service has provided a wealth of inspiration and experience for the students he taught, and he will be greatly missed by his colleagues and friends. We would like to thank Mr Diamond and wish him every happiness in his retirement.
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
October kicked off CCMs first Black History Month celebrations, starting with learning about the celebratory month in tutor time. Black History Month is a relatively new celebration in the Irish calendar and seeks to recognise the achievements of people of African and Caribbean heritage. Students are learning about important figures in Black history such as Mary Seacole, Claudette Colvin and Frederick Douglass.
Students have also had an opportunity to explore modern achievements by Black people such as Mae Jemison, the first black female astronaut to go to space; Denise Chaila, Limerick-born singer/songwriter; and Dianne Abbott, the first British black female MP Students and staff look forward to continuing to celebrate the culture and achievements of all nationalities and ethnicities throughout the year.
TY KAYAKING
The Transition Year students took to the water at Wicklow Harbour on Wednesday, October 14, when the instructors from Baltinglass OEC took them on a trip up to the Murrough. They all had a great time and were very lucky with the weather, some even said the water was warm.
The students learned basic
kayaking skills and played games while paddling along the Murrough. The instructors were very impressed with how quickly they learned to kayak and commented on the good behaviour of the group. The students enjoyed their experience and are looking forward to going out again in the Spring.
TY WORK EXPERIENCE
Good luck to all TY students heading out on their work experience placements this week. It is an important opportunity for students to gain a variety of valuable skills to prepare them for the world of work.
Each participant will keep a detailed diary of their daily experiences which will be submitted on their return to their Career Guidance teacher. In addition, students will be awarded up to 20 credits for their Work Experience diary that will count towards their end-of-year assessment.
