ST GERARD’S DAY 2020

We celebrated the feast day of Saint Gerard Majella on October 14. The school community celebrated the day where our theme was ‘Learning through love, courage through adversity and strength through faith’.

During the day we had a number of events including a flash mob dance-off (won by our fifth years), online quiz (always fun and quirky yet challenging) and Mass to celebrate the day. We were delighted that our School Chaplin, Fr John O’Connor, celebrated the Eucharist, albeit virtually, with our entire school community.

During the afternoon the entire student body took part in mixed team events ranging from hockey and rugby drill and tennis. In these strange times it was a fabulous day in glorious sunshine which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

GREEN SCHOOL COMMITTEE

Our Green School Committee has just completed our last action plan for global citizenship, litter and waste, and we received our Green Schools Flag via an online ceremony back in June. We also received a special award as a Regional Winner on the basis of our two assessment visits, which we just managed to get done before lock down back in March.

The theme of global citizenship is by nature very curriculum and classroom based and the committee received great co-operation from several staff who incorporated global citizenship themes into their classes. Our next plan continues on the theme of global citizenship and revisits energy also. Over the next three-year period we will be working on that aspect particularly.

TRANSITION YEAR NEWS

Once again this past fortnight our TYs have been busying themselves with a host of in-house activities. They are currently in the process of completing a Barista and photography course.

The Barista course is designed to give the students the skills required to make coffee to the highest standard in a café environment with certificates being provided on successful completion of the course. The photography course sets out to provide the students with the introductory basics in photography including lighting and aperture to mention a few. Both being enjoyed greatly by the participants.
