Options are explored to address improvements at Bray Harbour

- By MARY FOGARTY

RPS Consultants made a presentation about the harbour in Bray to members of Bray Municipal District during last week’s update to members on Zoom.

The company has carried out a feasibility study to examine developing a scheme to mitigate storm impacts and siltation.

They are examining the cause of the siltation, and looking at the viability of providing boat access along the north pier by an extended pontoon facility and to assess the viability of providing a secure berth for a passenger ferry at Bray Harbour.

While a final plan has yet to be agreed, engagement continues with local stakeholders. The consultants will shortly begin environmental assessments and developing public realm options. They will report back to members in the spring. According to the report, a lack of wave protection during easterly and north easterly storm events creates unsafe mooring conditions within the harbour, limits visiting boats and prevents commercial leisure activity.

Some damaging events in history include damage during Hurricane Lorenzo in 2019 and Hurricane Charley in 1986. In 1957, the lighthouse fell into the sea during Hurricane Carrie.

There is a lack of deep water creating navigation restrictions and limiting commercial and leisure activity.

Deep water issues inside of the harbour are compounded by a series of waste water treatment outfalls. The outfalls are covered by stone filled mattresses which limit dredging depths and contribute to siltation. The cost of moving them would be prohibitive at approximately

€9.6 million.

Stakeholders in an initial consultation included Bray Harbour Joint Development Committee, Bray Harbour Action Group, Wicklow County Council and other users.

The options explored so far include the theory that Bray could be a hub for any offshore renewable energy stations.

The objectives included mitigating the impact of storm conditions, reduce siltation, provide further boat access to enhance leisure and recreations and provide a secure berth for a passenger ferry.
