Schemes to protect buildings

- By MYLES BUCHANAN

THE closing date for applications for two schemes for the conservation of historic properties is fast approaching.

Owners of eligible buildings can apply for funding under the Historic Structures Fund (HSF) and Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS). Wicklow County Council will administer the scheme in the Garden County and the closing date for applications is January 29.

The aim of the Built Heritage Investment Scheme is to leverage private capital for investment in a significant number of small-scale, labour-intensive conservation projects, while supporting the employment of conservation professionals, craftspeople and tradespersons in the repair of the historic built environment.

Eligible structures under the scheme includes structures which are in the Record of Protected Structures (RPS). Structures proposed for inclusion in the RPS but not yet formally approved are also eligible. However, such structures must be added to the RPS by December 31 of this year.

Also eligible are structures in Architectural Conservation Areas (ACAs), or within the amenity of a National Monument, where exceptional circumstances are deemed by the Department to apply.

The primary focus of the Historic Structures Fund (HSF) will be on conservation and enhancement of historic structures and buildings for the broader benefit of communities and the public.

While the primary responsibility to care for and maintain a protected structure rests with the owner, the HSF will invest essential capital in valuable built heritage and help the owners and custodians of historic structures to safeguard them into the future for the benefit of communities and the public.
