Questions over lack of funding for PURE

-

CLLR John Mullen has called on Wicklow County Council to place pressure on the Government to provide further funding for the Pure Project.

The Pure Project is a partnership project and the first of its kind in Ireland which incorporates statutory and non-statutory organisations, including; Wicklow County Council, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, South Dublin County Council, Coillte, National Parks and Wildlife Service, and the Wicklow Uplands Council.

It is funded by Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment and was established in 2006 to combat illegal dumping and fly-tipping in the Wicklow and Dublin Uplands.

In September of last year it was confirmed that funding of €115,000 would be made available, but only for 2020.

Speaking at Monday’s Zoom meeting of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Mullen commented: ‘ The Pure Project is a flagship project for this county that has carried out some exceptional work. They only received funding for a year rather than securing a multi-annual budget. It is a project that was very much led by Wicklow and could easily be rolled out nationally. I would ask the Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council to talk to colleagues in Dun Laoghaire and South Dublin County Councils to encourage the Minister to sign off on funding for the project.’

Wicklow County Council Chief Executive Frank Curran replied that he would follow up the matter.
