Power ‘delighted’ with move to Harrowgate

- ANDREW RYAN

HAVING spent the past few years on loan at a variety of clubs, Greystones native Simon Power has said that he is looking to ‘kickstart’ his career after completing a permanent move to League Two outfit Harrogate Town.

The 22-year-old winger’s switch to Harrogate was confirmed by the club on Monday afternoon, bringing an end to a three-year run at Norwich City which was proliferated by a number of temporary stints at clubs in Holland, Scotland, and England.

Power originally signed for Norwich City from UCD, in 2018, but his opportunities in the first-team were few and far between. He went to FC Dordrecht in the Dutch second division in December, where he made 10 appearances and scored one goal.

He returned to the Canaries at the end of June, before being sent back out on-loan, this time to Ross County in the Scottish Premier League. His stint in Scotland was fruitless, as he made just four appearances; three of which being in the League Cup.

His third loan move, to King’s Lynn in the Vanarama National League North in 2020, during which he scored two goals in six games, threatened to be as unlucky, as it was prematurely ended in March because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Fortunately, he went back in August, with the club now playing in the National League, and it was here that he had the greatest impact; making 11 appearances, scoring twice. In total, he kitted out 17 times for the club, scoring four goals.

Now that he has completed his transfer to Harrogate, who currently sit 18th in League Two, Power said that he cannot wait to launch his career, in earnest, in North Yorkshire.

‘I am absolutely delighted to be here. I have heard about it for the past couple of weeks now, roughly, and I’ve had a couple of other clubs interested in myself, but after I spoke with the gaffer, you know, he has just said how ambitious this club is and they are looking to cement their stay in the Football League and that is one of the main reasons I came here.

‘I want to kickstart my career now playing in the Football League and I feel like, with my attributes, I can really help the team progress.’

His displays for King’s Lynn across his two tenures were what caught the eye of Harrogate manager Simon Weaves, who believes that supporters will be impressed by what Simon can offer.

‘We’ve liked Simon for a while now. We knew about his last summer at Norwich and he’s gone and nailed it with his performances at King’s Lynn out on the right, left, or up front. He’s a real pacey player who is very direct in his style and I think he will excite the supporters.’

Now that the deal has been done, Power, who has also represented Ireland at under-18s, under-19s, and under-21s, will be eligible to make his debut against 10th-placed Exeter City when the two sides meet on Tuesday night.
