SOMATECH: REDEFINING SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY

-

Founded by Dr Tony Callaghan (CEO) and Dr Alejandra Omarini (CTO), SomaTech utilises innovative fermentation technologies to convert food processing byproducts into valuable, nutritious ingredients. Their technology enhances resource efficiency, reducing carbon footprints for both food processors and producers. We sat down with Tony and Alejandra to discuss the SomaTech mission of offering an innovative solution to key issues around sustainability in modern business practice.

What inspired you to start your company?

New solutions are needed to improve food production, but it is often difficult to bring scientific research to commercial reality. In this sense, our company was inspired by a combination of factors. Firstly, existing solutions are not meeting the needs of the industry. As passionate scientists and entrepreneurs, we want to leverage our knowhow in fungal fermentation to make a positive impact for food companies by helping them be more efficient, circular, and innovative, while producing tasty and healthier food. These inspirations fuelled our determination to start our company, and continue to drive us forward every day.

What sustainability issue or challenge is your business addressing?

Our business is about addressing the challenge of sustainability by enhancing resource efficiency, particularly by utilising food processing by-products or side streams. We aim to reduce the carbon footprint of food production while simultaneously ensuring a secure supply of new ingredients. Our efforts also focus on making food more enjoyable, nutritious and healthier for people and the planet.

What are your plans for growth in Ireland and overseas?

Our immediate focus for growth encompasses Ireland and the UK, where we are dedicated to scaling our technology and characterising our ingredient portfolio. By solidifying our presence in these markets, we aim to refine our processes and products to meet the demands and preferences of consumers. Subsequently, we envision expanding internationally, leveraging the knowledge and experience gained from our initial ventures to enter new markets effectively.

What advice would you have for other budding entrepreneurs?

First and foremost, don’t give up! Secondly, one valuable lesson we’ve learned is the importance of heeding advice, especially when it challenges your preconceptions or comfort zones. While receiving praise and validation is undoubtedly gratifying, it’s the constructive criticism and uncomfortable truths offered by advisors that truly propel growth and improvement. Embracing feedback, even when it’s difficult to hear, is essential for refining your strategy, overcoming obstacles, and ultimately achieving success as entrepreneurs.

What do you hope to gain from participating in the Accelerate Green Programme?

Participating in the Accelerate Green Programme has already proven immensely beneficial for our business, as we’ve made significant strides and improvements under the guidance of programme experts. We aim to leverage this opportunity to broaden our network within the food industry, forging valuable partnerships that will deepen our understanding of industry dynamics and trends. By expanding our connections, we seek to cultivate meaningful relationships with potential customers, ultimately facilitating the growth and success of our business. Thus, our primary objective in participating in the Accelerate Green Programme is not only to refine our operations but also to establish vital connections that will fuel our future expansion and impact within the food sector.

SomaTech is currently participating in Bord na Móna’s 2024 Accelerate Green Programme.
