Cement ace Millar in the mix

A MIX of youth and experience was the combinatio­n for the two winners of Sunday’s National Ladies and Gents Pitch & Putt Matchplay Championsh­ip, sponsored by Horizon Energy Group.

The scenic links course at Seapoint P&P Club played host to the tournament and a firsttime winner was crowned in the Gents competitio­n, while the most successful ladies pitch & putt player of all time added to her great legacy. who came out in force to support the players.

There will be no club competitio­n this coming weekend due to Inniskeen hosting their Open Scotch Foursomes from Thursday to Sunday.

Also on Sunday the Leinster Strokeplay qualifiers take place - Seniors in MacBride, Inters in Collon and Juniors in Seapoint

It was a 10th ladies title for Portmarnoc­k’s Ger Ward after convincing winning margins in both her semi-final and final matches. Ward was an 8&7 winner over fellow Dubliner Ger Holland of RGSC in the semi-finals before she defeated 1988 winner Eleanor Walsh of Fermoy in the decider by 8&6.

Walsh had earlier knocked out defending champion Chrissie Byrne of St Bridgets at the last hole of their contest with a dramatic chip-in birdie - 1up. - all starting at 9.30. There is no qualifying for ladies.

The trials for the Louth team 2016 starts next Monday in Collon with the Ladies and Juniors, with the Inters on the Tuesday and Seniors on Wednesday 15th.

The preliminar­y rounds for the Club Fourball and Club Mixed Fourball have to be completed by Sunday June 19th.

In the Gents event, meanwhile, it was one of the youngest final pairings in years as Raffeen Creek’s Shane Murphy (21) won his first title and became the fifth consecutiv­e winner of the event from Cork. He defeated St Patricks Enniscorth­y’s Dayle Donohoe (18) 4&3 in the decider.

Donohue had come from behind to record a 2&1 victory over two-time winner Mark Millar from Drogheda’s Cement club Louth in the semi-finals. SUNDAY’S Charles Copas Junior Cupm kindly sponsored by the Copas family: 1st Kevin Donnelly 39 points, 2nd Tom Murphy 38 points, 3rd Sean Walsh 37 points.
