Jamie is the king of Europe!

Adventure of a lifetime for Togher boy (17)

- By HUBERT MURPHY

ONE young local man stole the show off the pitch - while the Irish battled on it during Euro 2016.

Jamie Monaghan and his tricolour wheelchair attended all the games and he became a huge hit with rival fans who queued up to have their picture taken with him!

One man with a distinct personal interest in the Irish side was there to cheer on his son, defender Stephen Ward.

‘ There is huge pride that Stephen was selected to wear the green jersey in one of the big world tournaments.

‘ The Italy game is something he’ll never forget,’ his dad, Sean, the Chief Superintendent in Drogheda garda station, remarked.

THE European adventure ended for Ireland on Sunday - but for one 17-year-old Togher boy it has left memories he’ll never forget.

With his trusty green, white and gold wheelchair, Jamie Monaghan travelled to Ireland’s three group games and then got tickets to make it back for the showdown with France.

And along the way he won the hearts of supporters all over the continent - especially after his ‘Jamie on Tour’ flag went missing at a campsite in Bordeaux.

An appeal went out to try and find it, and although unsuccessful, Emilie Salieges, the community manager for Camping de Bordeaux, very kindly got a new flag made up and sent it to Jamie in Lille .

He even made the newspapers in France about the story.

He was also at the centre of a bit of drama when trying to get into the fanzone for one of the games, Jamie, his parents Philip and Annette and his sister Aoife (19) were refused because of flags on Jamie’s wheelchair.

But he came through it all with a big smile - which grew even wider when fans gathered to get their picture taken with him wherever he went.
