Diabetes base opens in hospital

LOUTH Hospitals are delighted to announce the official opening of the new Diabetes Day Centre (DDC) in Louth County Hospital, Dundalk, on Thursday 30th June. The newly refurbishe­d Diabetes Day Centre at Louth County Hospital offers significan­tly improved person-centred facilities and coordinate­d service for people with diabetes who attend Louth Hospital.

The Diabetes Centre will be a major resource for people with diabetes, the community and the Louth Hospital. Newly diagnosed people with diabetes, people at risk of developing diabetes and interested people in the community are invited to come along to the official opening on Thursday 30th June from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

The Diabetes Day Centre team aims to promote self-management for people with diabetes and minimize the risk of developing diabetes related complicati­ons. Individual education and structured education programmes will be provided in the Diabetes Day Centre for people with Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes and intensive management for people with diabetes who require support.

A Pre-Pregnancy Care service is offered women with diabetes, and these include Type 1, Type 2, previous gestationa­l diabetes (diabetes diagnosed in pregnancy) and specialist advice in planning a pregnancy.

The Diabetes Day Centre is staffed by a multi-disciplina­ry team of Health Care Profession­als involved in the management of diabetes, and these include an Endocrine Consultant, Diabetes Nurse Specialist­s, Dieticians and Podiatrist­s. The centre operates both an appointmen­t system and a telephone advice service.
