Mattock sink Saints

MATTOCK RANGERS ST FECHINS 2-11 1-11

-

MATTOCK Rangers proved too strong for St Fechins in this Saturday evening game in Collon. Veteran Christy Grimes was the difference between the teams accounting for six of his side’s points and was the catalyst behind most of their attacks.

Playing with the breeze the visitors opened the scoring through Paul King after the Mattock ‘keeper had saved a shot from Joe Corrigan. Grimes equalised before two points from Ronan Holcroft and a single from Ryan Sheridan stretched the Fechins lead.

Collon replied with two points before Robbie Brennan fisted home the first of his two goals after hesitancy in the Fechins defence. The visitors fought back and scored four points in four minutes, frees from Holcroft, Ryan Sheridan and two excellent long range points from Joe Corrigan, to go two up. Grimes struck again to reduce the deficit to 0-8 to 1-4 at half time.

A goal and four points from the Collon men in a seven-minute spell sealed their victory with Robbie Brennan the hero once more as he found the back of the net. Even though Paul Mathews pulled a goal back and Corrigan scored two more outstanding points from play, St Fechins were always chasing the game. A 45’ from Grimes and David Reid’s fourth point of the day finished the scoring.

The home sides ability to take their opportunities was the difference between the teams. A series of excellent saves by Fechins keeper Mark Savage could only delay the final result.
