Lafferty rescues draw for St Pat’s

ST PATRICKS 0-12 MATTOCK RANGERS 2-6

-

A last gasp pointed free from Daragh Lafferty kept St Patricks on course to avoid relegation as the salvaged a draw against Mattock Rangers.

In what has been a lacklustre campaign for the champions they came into Friday night’s home game knowing defeat could see them in huge trouble at the bottom of the table going into the final round of games.

Points from Karl White and Daagh Lafferty gave the Lordship side an early lead but they were soon behind as full forward Robbie Brennan burst through the Pats defence before slotting the ball past Sean McGeough for the game’s opening goal.

Both sides traded points for the remainder of the half before a Christy Grimes free sent the Collon side in at the break 1-3 to 0-4 ahead.

The Pats fought back in the early stages of the second half scoring three successive scores with Karl White’s fourth point of the day sending them into the lead.

However, more frailties in the Pats defence led to a second Mattock goal and again it was Robbie Brennan who supplied the finishing touch as he netted his side’s second goal.

With five minutes remaining an Aiden McCann point levelled the game with the scoreboard reading 2-5 to 0-11. Mattock thought they had won it late on as a Christy Grimes free sailed over the bar for what looked to be a winner.

However, the champions rallied and worked the ball forward earning a free which Lafferty sent over much to the relief of the home supporters.
